Lister Infant School &Nursery
Parents often ask how they can
help their children to be ready for
school. To give your child the best
start it would help them if you
encourage the following:
Go to the toilet unaided and flush
after use
Wash and dry hands
Use a knife, fork and spoon
Drink using a straw
Put coat on, remove and hang it up
Dress and recognise own clothes
Tidy and clear away toys
Share their toys and be prepared to
take turns
Use a handkerchief.
Before children can read and write they
need to develop certain skills.
You can help by reading your child lots
of stories and showing them pictures.
Talk to your child and teach them
nursery rhymes and jingles. Talk about the
colours, size and shape of things.
Show them how to hold a book and let them
see you reading newspapers and books.
To be able to write clearly children must
have good control over hand movements.
Encourage your child to thread beads,
fingerpaint, use crayons and felt tips and
complete jigsaws.
School Meals
Children need to be introduced to the full
day gradually. For that reason children will
be part time for the first few days of the first
week. Once they start their second week
they will stay all day.
As from September 2014 all infant children
are entitled to a free school meal. Meals
at Lister Infant School are freshly cooked
everyday at the premises and are varied,
well presented and nutritious.
A vegetarian diet is available for children
who prefer it.
Packed Lunches
Children may bring packed lunches to
school. They should be in a rigid container
clearly labelled with your child’s name.
Fizzy drinks and sweets are not allowed.
Only one small chocolate item (treat size)
should be included in the lunch box.
